Reliable internet, sane cabling, real backups and a support plan. Most office IT problems trace back to one of these four.

Infrastructure foundations every growing office needs

Infrastructure only gets attention when it fails. The offices that rarely lose a day are not the ones with the most expensive equipment — they are the ones that got four basics right early.

1. Two ways to the internet

One provider will fail eventually. A second connection from a different provider, with a router that switches automatically, turns an outage from a lost day into a slower hour. Test the failover on purpose, at least twice a year.

2. Cabling and switching you can trace

Wi-Fi for laptops and phones, cable for desks, printers and anything that moves large files. Label both ends of every run and keep a simple diagram. A labelled patch panel saves hours on the day something breaks.

3. Backups you have actually restored

Three copies, two kinds of storage, one off-site. That is the old rule and it still holds. The part people skip is the restore test: a backup nobody has restored from is a hope, not a backup.

4. Power and a support plan

Clean, protected power for the network cabinet and servers keeps equipment alive through the switching that offices here deal with daily. Then decide, in writing, who is called when something breaks and how fast they must respond.

None of this is glamorous. All of it is cheaper than a week of downtime.
